VET NET Ally®
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 841,603 students used VA education benefits to pursue their higher education goals in 2021 (see the full report here). The national student-veteran organization, Student Veterans of America®, represents more than 750,000 student-veterans across all 50 U.S. States and three additional countries.
As non-traditional students, student-veterans bring maturity, experience, and knowledge to campuses across the country. Even so, the transition from life in the service to life on campus can be a challenge for some.
Creating an inclusive and welcoming campus environment for veterans and military servicemembers can make this transition easier and help veterans achieve their academic goals.
Recognizing that most college and university faculty and staff do not have military experience, the VET NET Ally awareness seminar has been designed to
-
educate members of the university community,
-
foster a supportive campus atmosphere, and
-
establish a network of visible Allies for veterans and other military-affiliated students.
The VET NET Ally program is dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of the unique challenges faced by military service members and veterans in higher education.
“I've been living and working in the military community for almost 20 years, and I still learned so much from Dr. Thomas! The data he presented reminded me why we do this important work and inspired me to do more for this incredibly special student population."
"The seminar should be presented to all faculty who work with military affiliated students across the college."
“This was fantastic. We could have had soggy tuna fish sandwiches and cold coffee and I would still have come out of that presentation raving about it and feeling motivated to work with our military students.”
